Well, you can't have one with the other. And in this case, when we're discussing the the Billy Carter to the Jimmy Carter that is the original Ghostbusters, it's a movie that was not only a cornerstone of my childhood, but remains a personal favorite film of mine. Sure, now that I'm older I might appreciate the comedy and chemistry of the 1st one a lot more than I was able to recognize back then, but at the end of the day Ghostbusters II was catered to the kids who were driving The Real Ghostbusters cartoon show to a 5 season run and Slimer! spin-off.
I still have the original VHS copy from of Ghostbusters II on my shelf from before I can even remember (circa 2-years-old) that has been watched so many times that a few minutes are completely worn out. I still remember not being able to handle Vigo, skipping the scene on many viewings. He was a scary mother fucker.
Sure, you can argue the whole movie isn't as inspired as the first one, with more focus on the busting and ghost with the changes in special effects since the 1st and less on the actual Ghostbusters. Not only that, but the positives of bringing back so many players from the first one meant that there was plenty of sharing when it came to screen time. It also followed a bit of a basic formula set forth by the first film - guys start out down, ghostly occurances start out, build up to a busting sequence followed by a montage, shit goes sour, whatever prick was in there way gets banished, Dana Barrett & a comic relief person are a pawn in the evil plan, the Ghostbusters come back and realize shit is a little more intense than they first thought, they man up with a sequence involving a multi-story-tall outlandish gimmick, action sequence with the baddie, the end.
Still, though it was never viewed as highly as the first film, it's still one that shouldn't be ignored and is still a good movie. And even if it wasn't as much of a classic as the first, it was still fun to see everyone back together with some upgraded effects, and Bill Murray was still on top of his game, bringing life to any scenes he was in. And really, his successful repeat in the shoes of Dr. Venkman helped the film serve its purpose: sell a lot of toys & make a lot of money.
So for song selection to the follow-up video highlights, I kept kept with the theme set forth by the first one and kept it with AC/DC. This time, I went with what might be my favorite song of theirs, I figured there was nothing more epic than For Those About To Rock We Salute You.
And with that, let's continue to be on track with updates with the Ghostbusters Week update for Tuesday, September 7th, 2010: without further ado, Dizzle presents Ghostbusters II featuring "For Those About To Rock We Salute You" by AC/DC. They're back!
