VIDEO: "Adventureland" featuring "Lisztomania (Holy Ghost! Loves Paris Remixomania)" by Phoenix
To me, there might not be a more relateable genre in film than the R-rated High School/Coming of Age category that always seems to pull me in. Whether its the cornerstones of the '80s like the Breakfast Club, to the more modern spin of Superbad (which shares the same director with Adventureland), it's fun to take that time machine back to when hormones were fully in control and every social occurance was life-or-death. Granted, with the way things are in the modern day world, it seems like the only thing to change between high school and now is the hormones cooling off.
What never fails to strike me as amazing is how despite the fact that everyone in the world has their own unique experiences of growing up, no matter what the specifics of the tale might entail, we can all relate. That's what struck me the first time I sat down to watch Adventureland: it may be set in what seems like a distant world, but you're still pulled right into it.
Despite being set in a pre-Tommy Dizzle world in the summer of 1987 (so more like "The Conception of Tommy Dizzle" era), it had everything I look for in a tale about growing up. What might the list of details include?
Dead-panning lead character, played by the only actor could play Michael Cera better than Michael Cera himself, Jesse Eisenberg. You may know him from Zombieland. Or The Social Network. Or even The Village if you've got a blackhole memory. (I do.)
Realistic high schoolers who toke, drink, maybe even both... but if there's no indication of weed, then there's no indication of it trying to be realistic. Luckily, when it comes to history, reefer madness was still plenty prevalent in the '80s, so we get to come along for every rip.
A chick who'll do anything for a good nailing as the love interest (played by Kristen Stewart, who I will only openly acknowledge having been in Into The Wild, not her shitty vampire flicks) with some slightly-more-slutty instigators along the way, because let's face it: You haven't really done any growing up until your heart and your dick have fought over control of your mind at least once.
A "Best of" soundtrack from the 80s, from radio hits that are still stuck in your head to this day to legendary artists that will never go out of style, including but not limited to: David Bowie, Judas Priest, The Rolling Stones, and The Cure.
Ryan fuckin' Reynolds. A little Van Wilder to your movie is not only a good decision, but serves as the make-or-break deal on the list.
To underscore this latest video creation with a song that fits the upbeat Adventureland narrative, I've decided to go with a remix of the track Lisztomania (which had the original version used on another video here), opting to use the Holy Ghost! Loves Paris Remixomania version. With such a focus on the pop-dance hits used in Adventureland, the beat of the track was enough to ensure it fit the flow easily.
So with that, if you've been reading all this without a clue as to what the movie Adventureland is, fret no more. Dizzle proudly welcomes you to Adventureland, featuring "Lisztomania (Holy Ghost! Loves Paris Remixomania)" by Phoenix. Step right up and claim your prize!
