The next choice for Dizzle Halloween Highlights was an easy one, as it is one of the very few movies that the appropriate waiting time adjective would be "all my life", as it rivals Rocky VI and the now-closer-than-ever Ghostbusters III with rocky "on-again, off-again" status. Before the days of the internet, upcoming movie gossip was almost non-existant and something I was especially clueless on, though I was getting to know the classic characters that scared the shit out of many a child, like Jason and The Terminator and Freddy. Somewhere in my fifth year of existance in the year 1993, I must've run into someone who loved to plant seeds of terror in the head of many a small child, as I was blessed with knowledge that would take a full decade to come to pass: Freddy vs. Jason was happening.
Granted, I realize now that the only "in" this kid had was most likely his or his older brother's subscription to Fangoria, as fans had clamored for it in the '80s when Freddy & Jason were at their prime. Originally, Friday the 13th Part VII was suppose to pan out to be Freddy vs. Jason, but with both characters owned by seperate companies, there were too many hands in the proverbial bloody cookie jar, and a different character was inserted as Jason's rival for The New Blood. Once Paramount sold the rights off to New Line Cinema in the early '90s, it was only a matter of time.
While Jason Goes To Hell was released with the ending that cockteased us all with the though that "YES! THE WORLD WILL END WHEN THESE TWO FIGHT!", the entire concept was almost killed when JGTH failed to gain traction over previous entries. While production was at a standstill, they even tried reinventing the Friday the 13th franchise with Jason X to keep the idea of Freddy vs. Jason relevant. Unfairly compared with other cheap sci-fi horror outings like Leprechaun 4: In Space and Hellraiser: Bloodline, people clearly weren't ready to shell out cash for a stand-alone Jason film until they saw him take on Nightmare on Elm Street's Springwood Slasher.
I remember seeing the trailer for the first time in theaters before Terminator 3, and while it got a laughing "Is it really happening?" reaction from the crowd, and while people will try and cut down the film that some of them waited for almost two decades to see, it's one that definitely lived up to my expectations. Blood, boobs, and a battle royal from the boogeymen themselves was what it was, and exactly what it should've been. There's such a guilty pleasure to these two character that even if you hate them, the idea of them facing off has that Jackass-type allure to it, like a train wreck you can't help but watch and take a little bit of joy in, whether you're young or old. Hell, my mom was forced to take me the night it was released, yet still maintains that the flaming corn field scene was the shit.
Even with remakes and dozens of films between the two characters, this remains among the best films from either series. Trust me: I watched every single Nightmare on Elm Street & Friday the 13th film in timelined chronlogical order the week before Freddy vs. Jason came out, so it's an opinion that actually has some data to back it up. (P.S.: Unless you're under 16-years-old with lots of time to kill like I was at the time, I don't recommend every trying to figure out some kind of workable timeline between two movie series with almost 20 films combined that frequently ignore their own continuity; you'll fuckin' kill someone on your way to figuring it out.)
To match such an epic footnote of cinematic history (to me, anyways), I went with an equally personally epic song choice in "Wolf Like Me" by the currently inactive TV on The Radio, which is by far my favorite output from the band. In addition to being awesome, it's got an eerie vibe to it that fits the body count well.
So with that, let's continue on with another Dizzle Halloween Update: Freddy vs. Jason featuring "Wolf Like Me" by TV on the Radio. Place your bets!
We'll have the next horror filled highlights for ya on or around next Sunday. --Tommy Dizzlemits
