Recently, during the last few weeks of Hollywood Video's existence, there was a trailer for the movie New York, I Love You, one of the now many spin-offs of Paris, je t'aime. None of the stores I was at ever got it in, so I had to seek it out.
I've never been a huge fan of indie flicks necessarily, but here-and-there I had been none to go with some pretty under the radar flicks: I own 3 copies of the Ryan Reynolds flick "The Nines" that 99.99% of the world has no clue even exists, as well as a copy of the sub-million dollar grossing horror flick "Venom", which I dragged a pal along to in theaters instead of caving to his requests of Lord of War.
On top of that, I have a tendency to enjoy a lot of indie flicks that aren't deemed "the best", but I'll take the simple entertainment. At some point I'll do a review, but in the meantime, my sudden urge to keep occupied led me to throw together a highlights package of the film. The original trailers used the song "1901" by Phoenix, so I went with the same band and chose the just-as-atmosphere-fitting "Lisztomania".
Essentially, the movie is a string of short stories that don't connect in all cases, but some characters do wander in and out of the film, crossing paths with some of the others, while others pop up for their segment and are done.
My personal favorite of the bunch was a comedy segment directer by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) featuring Anton Yelchin (most know him from Star Trek or Terminator Salvation, but he'll forever be Charlie Bartlett to me!!), James Caan being the funniest I've seen him since Get Smart or Elf, Blake Lively (Accepted), & Olivia Thrilby (Juno), though the segments with Ethan Hawke are definetly a close 2nd, easily stealing the scene any time he comes in. The Brett Ratner segment is set around a kid getting ditched come his high school prom: a very easily relatable segment that takes some WILD turns. I managed to sum that short up pretty good by giving it over a solid minute of time (from the 1:21 mark to about the 2:40 mark), but I think the song pace definitely matches the imagery in a very strong way there on in.
So without further ado, Dizzle presents to you a cliff notes version of the awesome that is "New York, I Love You" featuring "Lisztomania" by Phoenix.
